Black Ops, Vietnam : An Operational History of MACVSOG

by Gillespie, Robert
During the Vietnam War, the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observations Group (MACVSOG) was a highly-classified, U.S. joint-service organization that consisted of personnel from Army Special Forces, the Air Force, Navy SEALs, Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance units, and the CIA. This secret organization was committed to action in Southeast Asia even before the major build-up of U.S. forces in 1965 and also fielded a division-sized element of South Vietnamese military personnel, indigenous Montagnards, ethnic Chinese Nungs, and Taiwanese pilots in its varied reconnaissance, naval, air, and agent operations. MACVSOG was without doubt the most unique U.S. unit to participate in the Vietnam War, since its operational mandate authorized its missions to take place “over the fence” in North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, where most other American units were forbidden to go. During its nine-year existence it managed to participate in most of the significant operations and incidents of the conflict.

New online archive available for access – Goldsmiths’-Kress Library of Economic Literature

Thanks to our hard-working Collection Development Librarian (Christopher Dawkins), UNSW Library has agreed to fund access to the biggest online archival collection in the world of primary research material on the economic history of the Western world from the mid-15th century to mid-19th century.

The Goldsmiths-Kress Library of Economic Literature represents the culmination of the digitization efforts at the Goldsmiths’ Library of Economic Literature at the University of London, and the Kress Collection of Business and Economics at the Harvard Business School.

In Sirius, the UNSW e-resources gateway, it is listed under the name:

Making of the Modern World: the Goldsmiths’-Kress Library of Economic Literature 1450-1850

Making of the Modern World boasts 11 million pages of material and includes 61,000 monographs published between 1450 and 1850 and, additionally, 466 periodicals of relevance that were published before 1906. Every page of content in this collection is full text searchable.

The extent of the content has been described as “staggering”. The collection encompasses economic history in its broadest sense — including material on trade and commerce; banking and finance; political thought; international relations; transportation; manufacturing and technology; colonial history; imperial history; sociology; etc.

Following are the results of some sample searches:

  • Piracy (searching: pirates OR piracy) = 5334 documents
  • Slavery (searching: slaves OR slavery OR “slave trade”) = 14,948 documents
  • East India Company = 5416 documents
  • Gunpowder = 4950 documents
  • Steam engines (searching: “steam engine” OR “steam engines”) = 4129 documents

Access is available to UNSW and UNSW@ADFA staff and students via Sirius
